What It Really Means To Be Certified Organic

24 November 2022

At Ocean Road Dairies, we made it our priority to develop a truly organic infant formula range that is kind to the planet and to little tummies. To create a highly premium product, we went through an extensive certification process to prove our commitment to the environment and our precious consumers. This resulted in our Organic A2 protein infant formula and toddler milk range becoming certified organic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia.

So, what does this all mean? Keep reading to learn more about certified organic products.

What Is Organic?

The term “organic” comes down to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. If a product is organic, then it was produced without the use of man-made pesticides, nasty chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, or herbicides.  Similarly, the animals’ welfare is a priority, as they are well cared for and live in free-range conditions. Overall, organic pays attention to nature and works with it to produce truly natural products.

Whilst this all sounds good, currently in Australia, there is no regulation for brands using the term “organic” on their products. This means that a company can claim their product is organic without actually having to provide consumers with any proof that it’s really organic. So, when you pass by a product and see “organic,” there’s no way of knowing if it’s actually organic – unless it’s registered, and carries a certified organic badge.

What Does It Mean To Be Certified Organic?

The only way to know for sure if a product is organic is to look for an official certified organic claim and/or badge, which is a lengthy process to achieve. This formal organic certification of organic products provides consumers with the guarantee that the product has been produced in line with the strict national and industry Organic and Biodynamic Standards. In short, being certified organic proves that the product is truly organic.

How Did Organic A2 Infant Formula Become Certified Organic?

Each tin of Ocean Road Dairies’ Organic A2 Protein Infant Formula and Toddler Milk proudly wears the NASAA Certified Organic badge. This means that we underwent the organic certification process with The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA), Australia’s original organic industry association. This is an extensive three-year process which involves only organic input to the farm pastures, completely changing many of our farming processes, a series of soil testing, periodic audits and assessments to ensure we are complying with the standard. After this was all verified, we were officially awarded with the NASAA Certified Organic label.

During the certification process, we had to prove that we’re committed to producing our products following these internationally recognised organic agricultural principles:

  • Principle of health – to sustain and enhance the health of soil, plants, animals, humans and the planet.
  • Principle of ecology – based on living ecological systems and cycles, working with them and emulating them to help sustain them.
  • Principle of fairness – ensuring fairness with regard to the common environment and life opportunities.
  • Principle of care – manage in a precautionary and responsible manner to protect the health and wellbeing of current and future generations, and the environment.

Why Choose A Certified Organic Infant Formula?

If a product carries a certified organic badge, this means that it was farmed naturally, in accordance with the organic farming standard which means no pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides and the animal’s welfare is cared for, creating products that you can feel good about giving to your little ones.

At Ocean Road Dairies, our cows graze on chemical-free pastures, beside the Great Ocean Road, and are well looked after by farmers who really care about the environment. And with the NASAA Certified Organic badge, you can rest assured that we have the registered credentials to prove this isn’t just small talk. The result is a pure and nutritious infant formula that will provide your little one with all the goodness they need to grow, with nothing they don’t need.
